| There are currently 4 different types (known as 'biotypes') of herbicide resistant weeds in Alabama. The first herbicide resistant weed reported from Alabama is Annual Bluegrass (Poa annua) with resistance to simazine, reported in 1980. Local weed scientists estimate that there are 20 sites and more than 2,300 acres infested with herbicide resistant weeds in Alabama and they infest cotton, pastures, and soybean. The most widespread resistant weed of Alabama is Goosegrass (Eleusine indica), which infests an estimated 501-1000 acres and is found primarily in cotton. Palmer Amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri), with resistance to glyphosate is the most recently discovered (2008) new type of resistant weed in Alabama. |
