In maize fields near Freiburg, the entire area was covered with C. album despite applications of Primextra [48% atrazine] at up to 5 l/ha. In only one case was the tolerance stable; in the others the progeny of apparently tolerant biotypes were eliminated by the normal rate of 2 l/ha. Atrazine tolerance appeared to be associated with late germination (8-10 days later than the sensitive biotypes). Possible factors incolved are briefly discussed..
